Meteorologist Fired for Responding to ‘Racist’ Facebook Post
On Oct. 1, a viewer identified as Emmitt Vascocu wrote, “the black lady that does the news is a very nice lady.the only thing is she needs to wear a wig or grow some more hair. im not sure if she is a cancer patient. but still its not something myself that i think looks good on tv. what about letting someone a male have waist long hair do the news.what about that (cq).”
Lee replied the same day, “Hello Emmitt–I am the ‘black lady’ to which you are referring. I’m sorry you don’t like my ethnic hair. And no I don’t have cancer. I’m a non-smoking, 5’3, 121 lbs, 25 mile a week running, 37.5 year old woman, and I’m in perfectly healthy physical condition.
“I am very proud of my African-American ancestry which includes my hair. For your edification: traditionally our hair doesn’t grow downward. It grows upward. Many Black women use strong straightening agents in order to achieve a more European grade of hair and that is their choice. However in my case I don’t find it necessary. I’m very proud of who I am and the standard of beauty I display. Women come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and levels of beauty. Showing little girls that being comfortable in the skin and HAIR God gave me is my contribution to society. Little girls (and boys for that matter) need to see that what you look like isn’t a reason to not achieve their goals.

Vascocu replied that Lee was right to be proud of who she is and that he is not a racist, but “… this world has … certain standerd (cq). if youve come from a world of being poor are you going to dress in rags?…”

But the fact that the slide was publicly presented for laughs during an annual medical school sponsored event attended by more than 200 physicians, faculty, residents and guests is both shocking and indefensible.
Not only was Dr. Christian Head’s face superimposed onto the body of a gorilla standing on all-fours, but the photo also depicted him being sodomized by his Caucasian supervisor. This, unfortunately, was just one of a series of racially motivated incidents that Dr. Head has had to deal with over the past several years at UCLA. His complaints to administrative leaders at the Medical Center, the University and UC Regents have gone unanswered. In fact, his complaints have spurred additional acts of humiliation, attempts to push him out of academic medicine and retaliation.”

White America wants to pretend that it didn’t create the conditions in which poor ghetto dwellers now live. We want to forget our history. We don’t want to know that white racism created the ghetto and white indifference sustains it. We don’t want to admit that cops in big cities like Chicago will tell white kids like me to “get the hell out of the west side because those animals are capable of anything and you need to protect your wife.” We want to feel good about ourselves more than we want justice, we want sedation rather than peace, the appearance of opportunity rather than the concrete reality of it, comforting fictions rather than hard truths. Will America ever be equal? We can pray, we can hope. But we’re not there yet.

What the ever living fuck?
I’m not surprised to see that they are white conservative Christians who were abusing adopted black children. Is this outcome a risk in every transracial adoption? No. But internalized racism doesn’t go away just because people are Christian or call themselves saving a child of color via adoption.
Please reblog if you can, because this story needs to cause immediate and powerful outrage that this child was treated this way and that this shit could even happen in the first place.
Also? This is why I want to immediately throw bricks at any fellow white person who claims that because they have a PoC family member, they can’t POSSIBLY be racist or act in racist ways that hurt that family member. Because parents never abuse children, husbands never abuse wives, etc, etc, right? RIGHT? (Last sentence was sarcasm).
